But not all roguelikes run well on the Deck. That’s why I’ve tested dozens to bring you the top 5 that not only work, but shine on Valve’s portable powerhouse.
1. Hades
Hades is a masterpiece of the genre and one of the most polished roguelikes on Steam Deck. With tight controls, fluid animations, and near-flawless performance, it’s a must-have.
What makes Hades stand out is its storytelling. Every run feels like progress — not just in power, but in narrative. The voice acting is top-tier, and the art style pops even on the Deck’s 7-inch screen.
2. Dead Cells
Dead Cells is the OG Steam Deck roguelike. It’s fast, brutal, and packed with upgrades. The game runs buttery smooth at 60fps, even during hectic boss fights.
What I love most is the control scheme. The Deck’s joysticks and triggers map perfectly to melee, ranged, and special attacks. No need to remap — it just works.
3. Vampire Survivors
Vampire Survivors is a roguelike in disguise. It’s more of a “reverse bullet hell” where you run, pick up power-ups, and survive endless waves. It’s deceptively simple — and dangerously addictive.
On the Deck, it’s a perfect fit for quick sessions. The game barely taxes the hardware and runs flawlessly in handheld mode. Just don’t blame me if you lose two hours in a single sitting.
4. FTL: Faster Than Light
FTL is a classic. It’s the kind of game that feels like it was born for handheld play. Managing your ship, crew, and resources between battles creates a rhythm that’s easy to get lost in.
Performance is rock solid. Even with multiple windows open and systems overheating, the game stays smooth. The UI is a bit tight on the Deck’s screen, but it’s manageable. The catch, if you had it for free (as I did) on the Epic Games Store, it will require a bit of tinkering with controls, and for the first launch some more tinkering on Heroic Games Launcher. But hey, its’ worth it!
5. Slay the Spire
Slay the Spire is pure card-based strategy. Each run offers a new deck, new synergies, and new ways to get crushed. The game is a perfect mix of luck and skill.
On the Deck, the UI scales beautifully. The touch controls are responsive, and the game never stutters. It’s one of those “just one more run” titles that fits the handheld lifestyle perfectly.
