My Deck once hit 98°C mid-session during a heatwave and I genuinely thought I’d cooked it. Turns out that’s closer to normal than you’d think, and most overheating scares have a fix that takes less than five minutes. Here’s what’s actually going on under the hood, and what to do about it.
Why The Steam Deck Gets Hot In The First Place
The Deck’s APU can pull anywhere from 1W to 15W in portable mode, and by default Valve doesn’t cap that draw at all: the chip just takes what it needs to hit your target framerate. Push a demanding game at max settings and you’re basically running a tiny space heater in your hands. That’s by design, not a defect.
Ambient temperature matters just as much as the game you’re running. Valve’s own specs put the safe operating range at 0°C to 35°C, and once the room crosses that line, the Deck starts throttling itself before you even notice a problem. Playing on a couch in direct sun, in a stuffy bedroom in July, or docked in a poorly ventilated TV cabinet all push you toward that ceiling faster than you’d expect.

What’s Actually Normal vs What’s Not
This is where most people panic over nothing. Under a sustained 15W load, GPU junction temps sitting in the 85-95°C range are within spec, fan noise and all. The chip only throttles once it crosses roughly 100°C, and it shuts itself down entirely at 105°C to protect the silicon before any real damage happens. So if your Deck feels hot but hasn’t dropped frames or powered off, it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to.
What’s not normal: the fan spinning at full speed on a menu screen, the back panel too hot to hold comfortably during light 2D games, or repeated shutdowns during moderate workloads. That points to something blocking airflow, not the chip working as intended.
Fixes That Actually Work
- Cap your TDP manually. Open the Quick Access Menu, go to the battery tab, and set a TDP limit around 8-10W for most 2D or older titles. You’ll barely notice the framerate hit, and the Deck runs noticeably cooler.
- Clear the fan intake. Pocket lint and dust build up fast in the bottom vents. A can of compressed air held a few inches away, run in short bursts, clears most of it without opening the case.
- Ditch the case while docked or plugged in. Some cases trap heat against the back panel exactly where the vents are. Fine for portable play, bad news for long docked sessions.
- Turn on the frame limiter. Locking a game to 30 or 40 FPS instead of letting it hit 60 uncapped cuts power draw significantly for a barely noticeable smoothness trade-off.
- Give it airflow. Playing on a soft surface like a bed or couch cushion blocks the bottom vents entirely. A hard, flat surface (or nothing under it at all) makes a bigger difference than people expect.
I run my Deck at a 10W cap for anything that isn’t a AAA release, and the difference in fan noise alone is worth it, not just the temperature.
When It’s Time To Actually Worry
If the fan is loud even at idle, if you’re getting shutdowns during light use, or if the back panel stays hot to the touch well after you stop playing, that’s not a settings problem anymore. Internal dust buildup on the heatsink fins or dried-out thermal paste on an older unit are the usual suspects at that point, and that’s when it’s worth checking Valve’s official support before opening anything up yourself and voiding the warranty.
Most overheating worries aren’t actual overheating: they’re a Deck running exactly at spec while you assume something’s wrong. Cap your TDP, clear the vents, and keep it off soft surfaces, and you’ll rarely see that fan spin up in the first place. If it’s still running loud and hot after all that, that’s your sign to get it looked at rather than keep pushing it.
