Valve’s September Steam Update Brings HDR Streaming to Steam Deck OLED — Here’s What Else Changed

The September 2026 Steam client update quietly slipped in a feature Steam Deck OLED owners have been craving: HDR streaming support. This isn’t just a minor tweak — it’s a game-changer for those who stream PC games to their Deck. Let’s break down what’s new and how to use it.

What’s New in the September 2026 Steam Update

Valve released this stable update on September 1st, 2026, and it affects all platforms — Desktop, Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and SteamOS. While the changelog might look modest, some of these updates directly impact the Steam Deck experience.

HDR Streaming for Steam Deck OLED

For the first time, Steam Deck OLED users can now stream games in HDR. This brings a richer color range and better contrast to streamed games, making visuals pop in a way they couldn’t before. It’s a huge leap for remote play quality, especially if you’re using the Deck in handheld mode with HDR content.

According to GamingOnLinux, this update also improved video color range across all platforms, not just the Deck. But for OLED owners, this is the headline feature.

Remote Play Gets Smoother

Valve fixed a frustrating bug where the Steam streaming client would fail to launch on Windows 10. This patch rolled out on September 2nd, followed by another fix on September 9th addressing high CPU usage in steamwebhelper — a background process that can bog down streaming performance.

If you’ve ever experienced lag spikes during remote play, this should bring noticeable improvements, especially when streaming more demanding titles.

Steam Input Improvements

Valve continues refining Steam Input, making controller support more reliable across a wider range of games. This update brings better compatibility with third-party controllers and smoother transitions when switching between local and remote play.

Easier Account Switching

You can now change Steam accounts while a game is running. The system will warn you that active games will close, but it’s still a handy feature if you share your Deck with others.

Valve also added an ‘Ask which account to use on startup’ toggle in the startup account chooser. The confirmation dialog was removed in most cases, streamlining the login process.

How to Enable HDR Streaming on Steam Deck OLED

  1. Make sure your Steam client is updated (it should auto-update)
  2. Connect your Deck to the same network as your PC
  3. Launch Remote Play and start a game
  4. Go to the Steam menu > Settings > Remote Play
  5. Enable HDR Streaming if available

Not all games will immediately look better with HDR, but if your PC supports it and the game renders in HDR, you’ll notice a significant visual upgrade.

Minor Fixes That Matter

A bug causing a single pixel line to sometimes appear above the header on the home screen was finally fixed. It might seem trivial, but it’s the kind of polish users expect from Valve’s flagship handheld.

Final Thoughts: Should You Update?

Yes. This update brings real quality-of-life improvements, especially for Steam Deck OLED owners. The HDR streaming alone makes it worth the download. If you’re using the Deck for remote play, this might be the most important Steam client update of the year.

Go ahead and reboot your Deck to apply the update — and don’t forget to check if HDR streaming is enabled in your Remote Play settings.
